In this past week’s Womens March 2018, I saw an ocean of pink pussy hats and even wore one on my t-shirt. I turned to my friend and said, “Why are they pink? My pussy isn’t pink. I think mine might be more on the beige side, since I’m black.” My friend from El Salvador said hers isn’t either. Am I marching for equality and yet still promoting a white persons take of a pink pussy?
Full disclosure: I have never seen another pussy up close so I don’t know what color they are anyway. (Mine, yes…of course…we should all know what we look like).
We had a good guffaw over that.
And then it occurred to me that maybe the pink is symbolic for girls. Like blue, at birth, is automatically assigned to boys.
But doesn’t that then mean that we’re promoting the typical girls vs boys stereotype? Or is it the color of irony, poking fun at the very traditionalism that we in the pussy hat brigade are marching to buck? Is the hat representative of a multi-layered deconstruction of what it means to be female? Are cats pink?
Apparently I wasn’t the only one to have those thoughts. LMGTFY: Pussy Hat Project
My hat was blue. I think we have far more important things to focus on than what color hat any of us wear. Whatever the color, the hat is symbolic of our collective determination to fight for equality and rights of those under attack, me included.
So, stand down, Jess. Stand down. You’ve gotta pick your battles.
